Successful Marketing Campaigns of 2023
Heinz and Absolut
Heinz are renowned for their tomato ketchup, but in 2022, the company did something different: it released its own brand of pasta sauce and created one of the most successful marketing campaigns of 2023.
The campaign was called ‘Ridiculously Late, Ridiculously Good’ because the company launched its first pasta sauce 150 years after the business was established. However, the director of new ventures at Heinz wanted to accelerate the awareness of the pasta sauce in the UK, and Heinz x Absolut was born.
Shortly before April Fools this year, Heinz and Absolut revealed an unusual collaboration that left many people thinking it was an April Fools prank.
So, what prompted the tomato sauce brand to pair up with a vodka company? American model Gigi Hadid’s take on Penne alla Vodka went viral on TikTok in 2020, and people have been trying to make the dish ever since.
The campaign went live in mid-March with out-of-home ads across London, followed by a social media campaign featuring the hashtag #AbsolutelyHeinz. The campaign used a range of niche and mass marketing to encourage users to try out the new sauce. Niche marketing was utilised by gifting 150 food nano and micro-influencers the Pasta alla Vodka for free to share with their communities online. Within one week of the campaign’s release, the hashtag received over 6.2 million views on TikTok.
How did the two companies measure the success of the marketing campaign? The sales of Heinz pasta sauces were up 50%, and the limited edition sauce sold out within days.
The successful partnership between Heinz and Absolut exemplified the potential of exploring cross-industry collaborations to reach new and diverse audiences.
Coca-Cola’s Create Real Magic with Generative AI
It’s no secret that Cola-Cola’s marketing campaigns are successful and memorable. Remember the ‘Share a Coke’ campaign that was released in 2013? So do we!
The one thing that Coca-Cola does well is utilise new technologies for their campaigns, and their ‘Create Real Magic’ campaign this year was no exception.
In March, Coca-Cola released their ‘Create Real Magic’ website, inviting everyone worldwide to create their own Coca-Cola campaign using company assets on an AI platform.
The website, which uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 and DALL-E tools to create original ads, was a huge success. It originally started as a competition, with the winner having their ad showcased in New York’s Times Square and London’s Piccadilly Circus.
The ‘Create Real Magic’ campaign demonstrated the company’s ability to engage consumers on multiple levels, creating a sense of co-creation and shared ownership over the brand’s narrative. By opening the platform to artists and consumers, Coca-Cola blurred the lines between traditional advertising and user-generated content, fostering a deeper sense of brand loyalty and advocacy.
The campaign, released in March, was so successful that Coca-Cola has recently released a Christmas edition campaign, where artists and consumers can now create Christmas cards on the Create Real Magic website.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara
Have you ever seen a London tube put mascara on? No one had until Maybelline UK released their mascara campaign in July.
To grab people's attention in London and worldwide, Maybelline placed huge rubber eyelashes on a London tube and bus using a little CGI.
The company’s campaign first went viral on social media when a video promoting Sky High Mascara showed a London tube fitted with fake lashes passing through a mascara wand. The second half of the footage showed a giant mascara wand emerging from the side of a building and hitting a set of lashes over a double-decker bus.
While the two shots in the video look incredibly real, it was a digital marketing stunt, and what you see in the video you can’t see in real life.
Maybelline’s marketing team aimed to create a disruptive campaign to hero their mascara, which they certainly delivered.
Warner Bros + Mattel (Barbie Movie)
If there’s one campaign from 2023 that stood out for months on end, it was the campaign for the Barbie Movie executed by Warner Bros and Mattel.
Unlike all the campaigns mentioned above, the Barbie Movie campaign went above and beyond, creating a range of social campaigns, OOH activity and brand partnerships to get consumers excited about the movie.
As well as months of movie promotion, which saw Margot Robbie wearing different Barbie outfits from various years, the marketing for the movie went above and beyond. From billboards featuring nothing but Barbie pink and the movie release date to a new bookable Barbie-themed Airbnb in Malibu and even a Barbie-themed Grill’d burger bundle right here in Australia, everywhere you looked, you saw Barbie.
Within three weeks of the movie’s release, it grossed $1 billion at the box office. Was this due to the incredible $150 million marketing campaign? It definitely had something to do with the movie’s success.
Uber Eats Ramadan
The holy month of Ramadan is a time for fasting, gratitude and community among Muslims.
Marking the end of every day is Iftar, the fast-breaking meal enjoyed by those observing Ramadan around sunset. During this year’s Ramadan, that’s what Uber Eats focused on for its campaign in the UK.
Uber Eats cleverly connected with the Muslim community in the UK through its series of billboards showcasing signature Iftar dishes and an invitation to schedule an Uber Eats dinner delivery when the fast is over.
So, what made this campaign so unique? The billboards were updated daily to reflect the exact sunset time as it shifts by a few minutes each day. No matter where you were in the UK, whether it was London or Glasgow, the billboards showcased the exact time sunset was in your location.
This campaign was a unique and creative way to show that inclusivity matters and drive Uber Eats deliveries during Ramadan.
